Residency in Equine Surgery

Centre Hospitalier Vétérinaire Equin de Livet, France

The Equine Hospital of Livet organizes a 3-year residency in large animal surgery (equine option) for July 2025 - 2028. The training programme will allow the candidate to acquire in-depth knowledge of surgery and related disciplines (diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, internal medicine, pathology) following the guidelines of the ECVS (European College of Veterinary Surgeons).

Hospital

The Equine Hospital of Livet is a private practice located in Normandy, the heart of horse breeding in France. We treat horses of all disciplines with a well-balanced activity between racehorses, sports horses and leisure horses. There are currently 32 veterinarians (including 3 ECVS diplomates and 3 ACVIM/ECEIM diplomates). The hospital is composed of 9 specialized units: surgery, lameness investigation, MRI, scintigraphy, CT, intensive care and neonatalogy, internal medicine, isolation and theriogenology.

Prerequisites

The candidate must be a qualified veterinary surgeon and have graduated from an institution accredited by the ECVS. He/she must hold a license to practice veterinary medicine in France. The candidate must have completed at least one year of additional clinical training.

A satisfactory knowledge of the French language is mandatory.

Programme

The programme duration will be 3 years (156 weeks). The resident will work with 3 ECVS-Diplomates. At least 120 weeks will be spent in surgery under the supervision of an ECVS Diplomate. The resident will also work 4 x 2-week periods (80 hours) under the supervision of an expert in anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine and pathology. Diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology and pathology rotations will be performed outside the practice with specialists.

The resident will participate in the after-hours emergency service rotation at a rate of one week every four (including holidays). He/she will also participate regularly in the outpatient activity (including advanced imaging technique). A period equivalent to 18 weeks will be available to develop and implement a clinical research project and to write 2 publications aimed at journals approved by the ECVS.

Participation to meetings and additional courses will be financed by the practice.

At the end of the programme, the resident will be able to submit his or her application to the ECVS in order to receive permission to sit the board certifying exam.

Programme Start: 1st July 2025
